The Trinity Park neighborhood off East Campus is on alert following two rapes in less than a week.
Local leaders have distributed fliers and e-mails warning residents to be cautious in and around their homes, and police are actively investigating the crime.
The first rape occurred last Monday when a woman came back to her Gregson Street home and found a man inside, according to published reports.
The second happened last Thursday evening, when a woman on Green Street went to take her garbage outside and was confronted by a man who said he had a gun.
After the second rape, the Durham Police Department released the information to the community. Police are not saying whether the cases are related, but they have released only one composite drawing.
The suspect in the Gregson Street case is described as a 6'1" black man weighing 180 lbs. with short hair and possibly some facial hair. He is between 20 and 30 years old and has a medium build and dark complexion.MORE

Late Thursday evening, police arrested the man suspected in a Feb. 3 rape on Green Street, one of two that week near East Campus. 36-year-old Leroy Samuels Jr. was reportedly picked up near the intersection of Broad and Main streets, after someone alerted officers to a man matching the description of the rapist.
He was charged with first-degree rape, first-degree sexual offense, first-degree burglary and second-degree kidnapping, and was held on a $150,000 bond.
In the Feb 3. crime, a man, claiming he was armed, confronted a woman as she was taking the trash out of her Trinity Park home. On Jan. 30, a woman was raped by a man who was in her Gregson Street home when she returned home at about 2 a.m. MORE

Durham CrimeStoppers are seeking information about a rape and robbery near East Campus Jan. 10.
A woman reported that at about 8 p.m. as she walked to her car in the 400 block of North Gregson Street near Minerva Avenue, a man approached and hit her on the head several times with a mallet-like weapon.
The man--described as a 5'7" black man of slender build, wearing a blue hooded jacket with the lower half of his face covered--forced the victim to drive to Central Carolina Bank at 1516 North Gregson St., then Wachovia Bank at 2000 West Main St., then the Duke University Federal Credit Union at 1400 Morreene Rd., at which places he forced her to withdraw money. He then forced her to drive to Maxwell Street near Buchanan Boulevard and sexually assaulted her. The man told the victim to drive him to the dead end of Wilkerson Avenue, where he got out of the vehicle and fled. MORE
